Why literacy matters for South Africa’s future

Every child deserves the chance to read with confidence.

Reading can change a child’s life. It opens the door to learning, builds confidence and creates opportunities that last for years.

Yet, millions of South African children never get that chance.

By the end of Grade 4, about 82% of learners cannot read for meaning. They can recognise words on a page, but have trouble comprehending the context of the subject matter. When this gap appears, every learning area becomes more difficult and overall education becomes a challenge.

This problem is even worse in under-resourced communities, where books are hard to find and educational support is limited.

When a child struggles to read, it is often hard to keep up at school. Their confidence can drop, and future career choices become fewer. These effects can last into adulthood.

Reading shapes more than school results

Reading helps children ask questions, solve problems and understand the world around them.

For Christian families, it also opens the pages of Scripture.

When children can read the Bible on their own, they start to discover God’s love, wisdom and promises. Age-appropriate resources help them connect with Scripture in ways they understand, making God’s Word something they can return to throughout their lives.

Built for South African children

The Bible Society of South Africa started the Future Leaders programme to help children improve their reading skills and learn biblical values.

The programme offers age-appropriate resources for learners from Grade R to Grade 7. Each book is chosen to build reading skills and encourage values such as compassion, integrity, perseverance and hope.

Younger children are given interactive Bible literacy resources that makes reading fun. Older learners receive Scripture-based materials that address the questions and challenges they face as they grow into adolescence.

The goal is simple: to help children become better readers and grow in their faith.

Real children. Real impact.

The Future Leaders programme is already having a positive impact.

When the programme started in KwaZulu-Natal, nearly 10 000 learners received Bible-based literacy resources through a partnership with Phakama Africa Community Projects. Teachers noticed increased classroom participation, greater enthusiasm for reading and deeper engagement with Scripture in the learners’ home languages.

The children noticed the changes as well.

One Grade 7 learner said:

“I feel free when I read this Reach4Life book. It will help me make decisions that will lead to a successful life. I will follow the instructions in this book so I can succeed in life.”

Another learner shared:

“We do not have Bibles at home, so we are unable to read them. This book will teach me to love and respect people more. It teaches me not to do wrong things and to worship God.”

Teachers have seen how valuable these resources are in their classrooms.

One Grade 5 teacher said:

“The lack of resources is tough, but these books will help them a lot. It will have a positive impact on their reading skills and their knowledge of the Bible.”

Investing in the future

The name Future Leaders reflects what the programme hopes to achieve.

The children learning today will become tomorrow’s teachers, nurses, entrepreneurs, parents, pastors and community leaders.

Helping a child learn to read is an investment in South Africa’s future. Strong readers help build stronger families, churches and communities.

Every child who discovers God’s Word carries that hope with them long after they leave the classroom.

How you can help

The Bible Society plans to expand the Future Leaders programme so that 20 000 learners each year can receive these resources in communities across South Africa.

Just R45 provides one child with an age-appropriate literacy resource that builds reading skills and introduces them to God’s Word.

You can sponsor a child, support a school or pray for the nationwide success of the programme. Every gift helps another child learn to read, grow in faith and step into the future with confidence.
